All students participate in the PTA-supported FoodPrints curriculum, which uses activities such as planting, harvesting, and cooking to teach concepts in science, math, social studies, physical education, and writing, all while promoting healthy eating.
Launched at Watkins
Today, in partnership with DCPS, FoodPrints serves 4,500 students in 13 DC public elementary schools. But the program’s origins are rooted in Watkins Elementary, where it launched in 2009.
The program started with a vegetable garden, but a facility was clearly needed. A group of dedicated volunteers made up of parents and administrators set out to convert an unused classroom into a teaching kitchen. With the help of a kickstarter campaign – and Chef Jose Andres – the dream became a reality in 2011.
